Under the law as it stands

Social network site
retains "deleted" data

An Austrian law student requested all the information that a social networking site kept about him on his profile.

The social network sent him 1,224 pages of information. This included photos, messages and postings on his page, some of which he thought he had deleted.

He realised that Information he had deleted was still being processed against his wishes.

How the new
rules will help:

The Commission's proposals would guarantee the right to remove personal data from any website and effectively to be forgotten. You should also be able to move your data easily to another service provider. ("Data portability")
