Wednesday 9 May to Wednesday 30 May: Exhibition of Illustrated Poetry - “Bohemians: Et ce Chant dans mon Coeur”

Poster advertising eventTo coincide with Dublin Dance Festival, Dr. Deirdre Mulrooney & Padraic E Moore in partnership with the Alliance Francaise present “Bohemians: Et ce Chant dans mon Coeur”, an exhibition of illustrated poetry written by dancer Jacqueline Robinson and illustrated by Basil Rákóczi  founder of the White Stag Art Group.  This beautiful series of prints was made in Paris, where Robinson founded L’Atelier de la Danse, inspired by what she learned from forgotten modern dance pioneer Erina Brady when, along with Basil Rákóczi she was one of many Bohemian refugees in Dublin during World War Two.

This exhibition of rare 1971 prints, is in memory of Ireland’s first modern dancer, the recently deceased June Kuhn (née Fryer), with whom Jacqueline Robinson trained, and performed in many Dublin venues including the Abbey and Peacock theatres, and the Mansion House, as well as in the Archives de la Danse in Paris, and at the Rudolf Steiner Hall in London in the 1940’s.  Jacqueline Robinson was subsequently awarded a Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres by the French Government for her contribution to Modern Dance.

Liam O’Leary’s rare 1943 short film “Dance School” featuring Modern Dance Pioneer Erina Brady and her Irish School of Dance Art pupils, - with an open air dancing sequence in the Iveagh Gardens - will also be screened on a loop in the windows of European Union House, alongside b/w photographs of Brady’s 1940’s choreographies.

The exhibition is being organised in partnership with the Alliance Francaise and Irish Film Archive.  With special thanks to Walter Kuhn for sharing his private collection of prints, a personal gift from the artists.

It will run from 9 to 30 May at European Union House, 18 Dawson Street, Dublin 2.

Wednesday 23 May: "The Image of Europe: Visualizing a Continent": Talk by Professor Michael Wintle (University of Amsterdam), Trinity College Dublin

Poster advertising talkOn Wednesday 23 May, Professor Michael Wintle of the University of Amsterdam, will give a talk on "The Image of Europe: Visualizing a Continent" from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Neill/Hoey Theatre, Long Room Hub, Trinity College, Dublin.

Professor Wintle’s talk will be based on his celebrated monograph, The Image of Europe (Cambridge UP, 2009). It is a study of the concept of Europe from the earliest times to the present day, but with a difference: it examines the visual representation, the graphic image of Europe. Maps of Europe and the world are the most important sources, but drawings, engravings, paintings, sculptures, the applied arts, flags, buildings, coins, stamps and banknotes are also extensively examined. The continent of Europe has been variously represented as the demi-goddess Europa, a bull, a horse, a son of Noah, a Magus, a queen, and as the Empress of the World.

Michael Wintle will chart the way in which these visualizations of the continent have altered over time, and how they relate to and indeed affect changing ideas of the extent and nature of Europe in relation to the other continents. He will explore what effects these images have had on the 'reality' of Europe, and vice-versa. Special attention will be paid to the issues surrounding the use of visual sources in the practice of history. Reaching from the Ancient Greeks to the European Union, this talk covers the history over three millennia of Europe with its self-images and identities.

Professor Michael Wintle is Chair of Modern European History in the Department of European Studies at the University of Amsterdam, where he teaches on the degree programmes in European Studies. His research interests include the construction of European identity, visual representations of Europe, cartographies of Europe, and the cultural aspects of European integration. He has published widely on these subjects including articles, book chapters, edited volumes and monographs. His most recent publications include Ideas of Europe since 2012 (2002), Imagining Europe (2008), The Image of Europe (2009), and European Identity and the Second World War (2011).

This event is open to the public.
