Link designs & strategies

This document describes recommended link designs and strategies that can be used in current developments.

Glossary

  • Internal links are created with the editor of the CWCMS. They always begin with "/internet/...".
  • Managed documents are taken into account by a Web service (when used). They are located on the "europa.eu" domain.
  • WCM documents are managed by the CWCMS while Non WCM documents are managed by other applications (e.g. Staging Manager).

Introduction

RECOMMENDED

The following templates and link strategies are standards. The aim of a common approach to multilingualism management is to provide the most coherent user experience to our visitors.

If you plan to create or revamp a website, you should use these recommended link designs and strategies.

Other templates and link strategies are not standards. They were created for reasons of backward compatibility or for special cases (like navigation links). If you plan to create or revamp a website, you should not use the deprecated link designs & strategies.

The template of 2013 using PST

This link design is strongly recommended if you are going to start a new development for your website.

Let a document that links to another document.

  • Previously, the only way to display a link to a recently added translation concerning the second document was to regenerate the first one.
  • Since 2007, the first document can call a Web service in order to show the language coverage of the linked document. It means that you do not need to regenerate the first document anymore each time you add a translation concerning the second one.

Such a Web service can be used on links pointing to Managed documents (see glossary).
