1 - Do I need to hire an external contractor?

All EU websites should be hosted on EUROPA. For more information see page Creating a new site or subsite.

 
 

4 - Can my contractor have direct access to the website in order to make updates?

5 - What will happen with the website once the contract has ended?

All websites are archived when their topicality has expired.

 
 

6 - Should I always specify the copyright for the content I put on the web?

Yes, whenever possible. Please, consult page Legal requirements.

 
 

7 - What domain should I use?

The webpages of the European Institutions are using a common second level domain europa.eu. For more details consult the page Web addresses/URLs.

 
 

8 - I want to create a new website! Can I use an existing framework contract?

9 - What is my target audience and communication strategy?

It depends on your goals. Generally, it is better to serve one target audience well, rather than several badly.

11 - What's the IPG Classification? What is it for?

IPG Classification is joint a list of document classification by subject for all the institutions.

 
 

12 - What's the IPG description? What should I put in there?

It is used to identify the origin of the document. Refer to the table Metadata - Instructions.

 
 

13 - What keywords should I use?

Select keyword phrases that are as unique as possible to your site. Refer to the table Metadata - Instructions.

 
 

14 - Is the sitemap mandatory?

You should have it. Either have a map or A to Z list. Consult the page Ways to access the site.

 
 

15 - In how many languages should I have my website published?

The decision on the number of languages offered should be given careful consideration – it is usually determined by striking a fine balance between the type of content of the site, its main target audience and the resources available. For more on refer to page about Multilingualism.

 
 

16 - Where can I find pictures/videos/audio files for my website?

17 - Am I free to create my own layout? What's standard and what's not?

18 - What colours can I use? Where can I find colour references?

To maintain the image of the Commission and to assure the readers that they are in EUROPA, it is important that the mandatory colours are respected. Learn about them in the section General rules. Various online pages offer colour reference tables.

The Adobe Flash format may be used under special circumstances with the prior authorisation. For reference, please consult page Multimedia formats - Flash.

 
 

28 - What should be the maximum size of PDFs online? And images?

Try to keep the size of the PDF files under 2 MB. The size of images should be appropriate to their use, but not larger than 2 MB. For more, please, consult page PDF (Portable File Format).

 
 

29 - I've prepared a video for my website. What should be the maximum/recommended length, size and format?

Video clips should preferably be limited to less than 3 to 5 minutes to keep the attention of the user. The standard format to be used for downloadable files is MPEG 4. It is also allowed to embed the video in Flash as a Flash video file. Refer to the page Multimedia formats.
