“Management and legitimate use of intellectual property” will be the focus of an International Conference organised by the Internal Market DG in co-operation with the French Presidency. The Conference will take place in Strasbourg at the “Palais de la Musique et des Congrès” on 9-11 July 2000.
The Conference is intended to create a forum for exchange and discussion aimed at reaching a better understanding of the legal, technical and political developments taking place in the copyright field. Rightholders, the industry, users and Member States are faced to a greater extent than before with the rapidity of technological developments. Copyright protection should be developed in view of these new realities. This conference might either lead to some new legislative or non-legislative measures.
Topics to be discussed will focus on facilitating equal access to legitimate use of works, including the user's perspective. Licensing and management issues, that play a crucial role, and the need to adapt to new technical methods of exploitation will also be addressed as well as contractual rules, moral rights and applicable law.
It is also expected that discussions will allow a further advancement of the work which is being carried out at the international level (WIPO, WTO). Those issues to be discussed include broadcasters rights, audio-visual performances and the protection of folklore.
