Database of regulated professions in the EU Member States, EEA countries and Switzerland

The professions listed on this site are covered by Directive 2005/36/EC on the recognition of professional qualifications which entered into force on 20 October 2007.

The database includes the professions falling under the "General System" of mutual recognition of professional qualifications, craft professions benefiting from automatic recognition of professional experience and the "Sectoral professions" benefiting from automatic recognition on the basis of harmonisation of minimum training conditions: doctors, nurses, midwives, pharmacists, dentists, veterinary surgeons and architects.

A profession is said to be regulated when access to it and the exercise of it are subject to the possession of a specific professional qualification.

Each country is responsible for updating its regulated professions, competent authorities and statistics.

On this site, you will find:

  • Lists of professions regulated in the EU Member States, EEA countries and Switzerland;
  • Search functions to find regulated professions by country or by name;
  • Useful information such as contact points and competent authorities;
  • Statistics showing the number of migrating professionals affected by recognition of qualifications;
Further assistance can be obtained from the Contact Point of each country. The contact points are responsible for providing general information on recognition of professional qualifications provided for in Directive 2005/36/EC as well as on national legislation governing the professions and pursuit of those professions.

The database contains all professions regulated in the Member States. It does not however contain the conditions for recognition of professional qualifications as such. For this reference should be made to Directive 2005/36/EC and its annexes.
