Green Paper – Towards adequate, sustainable and safe European pension systems

The EU population is growing older and older. Many EU Member States are reforming their pension systems. The recent financial and economic crisis has aggravated and amplified the impact of the severe trend in demographic ageing. The crisis has revealed that more must be done to improve the efficiency and safety of pension schemes.

This Green Paper launches an EU-wide debate on the key challenges facing pension systems and how the EU can support Member State efforts to deliver adequate, sustainable and safe pensions. The Green Paper takes an integrated approach across social, economic and financial market policies. It has been prepared by DG Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities (EMPL), DG Economic and Financial Affairs (ECFIN) and DG Internal Market and Services (MARKT).
