Cheques

As paper-based means of payment, cheques are still commonly used in several Member States of the European Union. As by nature cheques cannot be processed as efficiently as other means of payment, e.g. electronic, the use of cheques notably in a cross-border context is increasingly discouraged. Cheques are therefore kept out of the scope of certain provisions of Community legislation. Even though cross-border payments by cheques are covered by Regulation (EC) № 2560/2001, the rule of equal charging of cross-border payments in comparison with corresponding domestic payments is not applicable to cheques. See in particular Recital 8 of the Regulation.
