Commission recommends principles to ensure effective protection of consumers in the online gambling services sector
On 14 July 2014, the European Commission adopted the Recommendation on principles for the protection of consumers and players of online gambling services and the prevention of minors from gambling. The Recommendation encourages Member States to pursue a high level of protection for consumers, players and minors through the adoption of principles for online gambling services and for responsible advertising and sponsorship of those services.
The recommendation was announced by the Commission in the Communication “Towards a comprehensive European framework for online gambling”, which was adopted in October 2012.

A study on behavioural responses was carried out to test a set of consumer protection measures related to online gambling. The study tested the relative effectiveness of different measures and indiviuals’ reaction. It was a source, in part, for the impact assessment.
