Group of Experts in Banking Issues (GEBI) (archived)

In order to facilitate direct communication between the banking industry, consumers and the European Commission, the Directorate General Internal Market and Services decided in 2010 to set up a Group of Experts in Banking Issues (GEBI).

The Group had two major tasks. Firstly it advised the Commission on policies and possible legislative proposals concerning banking regulation. Secondly it provided information, forecasts and analysis concerning the possible impact of banking policies and possible legislative proposals on various stakeholders.

Dissolution of GEBI

The GEBI proved to be very instrumental in assisting the Commission Services to develop new policy initiatives, mainly on capital requirements and on crisis management.  Now, with the adoption of the related proposals, we move towards a different phase, which requires less expertise in developing and drafting new rules but more focus on negotiations in Council and Parliament.  As a consequence, DG Internal Market and Services decided to dissolve the GEBI at the end of October 2011.
