Organisation & management and the Domain Name System (DNS)

The use of the Internet continues to develop and expand rapidly and is expected to extend into a vast range of applications for human and machine communication. The organisation and management of Internet naming and addressing systems ("Internet governance") is currently being reorganised in order to transfer management responsibility for these systems to the private sector. The non-profit Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has been entrusted with this task.

The European Commission is participating actively in the process of implementing the principle that ICANN should be globally representative. The Commission participates in particular, together with representatives of several Member States, in the work of the Governmental Advisory Committee to ICANN.

The Commission is also supporting the creation of an Internet Top Level Domain (.EU) for use by European business, citizens and administrations.

Consultation meetings with the European Internet community take place through the EC-POP (Panel of Participants in Internet Organisation and Management) forum
