Culture in the Digital Age "Example Projects"

Will we be able to look at our digital videos tomorrow? How to access Europe's cultural heritage? New interactive tools for the museums? The projects below show how Europe's culture can benefit from IST's.

Overview ¦ Example Projects

PRESTOSPACE: Ensuring digital preservation

Audiovisual material is much more vulnerable to being lost through technological obsolescence or physical or chemical deterioration than conventional artwork such as paintings, paper documents, or monuments. All audio and video recordings, important historical, cultural and commercial assets of the 20th century, are at risk of deterioration within the next 20 years. Under the PRESTOSPACE project, owners of audio-visual collections (broadcasters, archives, museums), research institutes, and industry work together looking for effective automated digitisation and preservation technologies.

EPOCH: Probing past memories in a digital future

Most of us find it rather hard to picture ancient times when viewing old bones and stone fragments in dusty museum display cabinets. Now archaeological artefacts can come alive with the help of European research that uses augmented reality, computer game and 3D-image technology to illustrate the past.
The project consists of a large network of 85 cultural institutions, university and museums joined in a united effort to resurrect cultural heritage sites. EPOCH will help spreading best practices in cultural institutions through coordination and training activities.

TEL-ME-MOR : Broadening representation in the European Digital Library

More than six million books, documents and other culturally significant works should become available online within the new European Digital Library over the coming five years. The IST project TEL-ME-MOR aimed to ensure that the national libraries of the newer EU member states are included in this ambitious objective

Agamemnon : A multimedia archaeological tour on your mobile phone

DOWNLOADS

An Italian-led research project is developing a service that allows visitors to use their camera-equipped 3G mobile telephones to get a personalised multimedia guide to archaeological sites and museums. A tour of a big outdoor cultural site can sometimes be a frustrating experience if objects are not easily located, identified or placed in historical context. The Agamemnon project is working on an interactive multimedia system that provides relevant text, videos, speech and pictures with 3D reconstructions, to visitors' mobile telephones

MICHAEL : A digital treasure trove for Europe's cultural heritage

The MICHAEL project has developed an electronic system to access, manage and update existing digital records of Europe's collections, including museum objects, archaeological and tourist sites, music and audiovisual archives, biographical materials, documents and manuscripts. Drawing on a system developed earlier by France's Ministry of Culture and Communication, it also allows users to enter new data.
