European Parliament Exhibit, 15 June 2005
The following projects have been funded by a variety of EC programmes. They were exhibited at the European Parliament on 15 June during the meetings of the Parliamentary Committees on Industry, External Trade, Research and Energy and Culture, Youth, Education, the Media and Sport, to which Viviane Reding, Commissioner for Information Society and Media, presented the newly proposed i2010 initiative:
CinemaNet Europe: Digital Technology to Support European Cinema
Funded by the MEDIA Programme, CinemaNet Europe is bringing documentaries to the big screen by transforming independent cinemas across Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, The Netherlands, Spain, Slovakia and the UK into digital cinemas. These screens will receive films by satellite instead of reels, making it easier and more affordable to get European films to a wider audience. The network went live in November 2004. More than 100 cinemas now have digital cinema technology and by the end of 2005, the number is expected to reach 180.

MediaNet : Bringing integrated Audiovisual and Multimedia applications over broadband networks to end-users
MediaNet – Multimedia Networking – is a European Research & Development Project funded by IST programme of the European Commission with additional financing from the partner companies and organizations. Under this project "Amigo TV" has been developed. Amigo TV is an innovative Community TV suite of converged "triple play" applications (voice, interactive TV and high speed internet) which enables viewers to :
- share personal media with affinity groups on TV (family, friends, colleagues, local cities, countries for leisure, e-well being and e-gov use)
- make TV viewing a social experience by adding rich communication and community support

s-Travel: using biometrics to improve Passenger Handling at Airports
DOWNLOAD
- s-Travel Project Profile (pdf)
s-Travel has been promoting the adoption of biometrics, smart cards, digital
certificates and many other technologies to streamline and secure the passenger
handling in airports. It developed “airport fast track lanes” at check-in,
security check, border control, and boarding. After testing in Athens and Milan,
it is being piloted in the USA (Minneapolis, Los Angeles, Houston)and tested by
the French Civil Aviation Authorities (DGAC) in 5 airports (Bordeaux, Lille,
Marseille, Lyon, Toulouse).

The following projects were exhibited in Brussels to the press on 21 February, 2005:
OPTIVIP: Electronic implant
DOWNLOAD
- OPTIVIP Project Profile
(.pdf)
- Slide presentation (.pdf)
The project has developed an implantable prosthesis for patients with a
certain type of blindness. A miniature camera worn on the patient's glasses
transmits images to the prosthesis which enables the patient to "see" what the
camera transmits. One patient has been implanted and clinical tests are in
progress. Initial results are good.

The project seeks ways of transmitting environmental hazard warning to
specific groups and individuals at risk through such channels as internet
provision to PCs, SMS messaging to mobile phones and PDAs, and even electronic
street panels. The technical work is now completed but some experimental
services are still being tested.

NETC@RDS : Access to health care for the mobile citizen

(.pdf)
- Slide presentation (.pdf)
EU Member States introduced the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or
comparable arrangements as of 1 May 2004. These cards replace the old E-128
form, which no longer exists, and the E-111 form (for tourists) which EU
citizens previously used to obtain access to health care in Member States other
than their own. Netc@rds is forging a common interoperable platform to
facilitate health care services abroad for mobile Europeans. It will integrate
the existing national computer networks and organisational systems which govern
access to health care.
