“Investing in ICT Research and Innovation”, Vienna, 22-23 March
The Vienna Conference is a major milestone on the road to forging an EU Vision for ICT Research, and included the prestigious European IST Prize Ceremony.
Vienna Conference Highlights
The conference itself opened in the afternoon of 22 March with keynote speeches from:
- Hubert Gorbach, the Austrian Vice Chancellor and Federal Minister for Transport, Innovation and Technology,
- Viviane Reding, Commissioner for Information Society and Media
- Esko Aho, current President of SITRA, former Prime Minister of Finland, and author of “Creating an Innovative Europe”
The afternoon was devoted to parallel sessions on:
- Improving the impact of ICT Research: New perspectives for ICT Innovation
- Boosting Investment for ICT Research
- ICT Research and the future Socio Economic Challenges for Europe
Day Two
Day Two opened with keynote speeches from Commissioner Reding and Esko Aho; these were followed by:
- “Industrial Perspectives” presented by Joachim Schaper, Vice President EMEA, SAP Research, SAP AG
- Reports from the working groups of the first day
A High level Panel discussion then brought together:
- Esko Aho;
- Joachim Schaper;
- Susan Binns, Director for Lisbon Strategy and Policies, DG Information Society & Media, European Commission
- Louk Teunissen, Deputy Director, Innovation Department , Ministry of Economic Affairs
- Manfred Dietrich, Head of the Directorate of Information and Communication, the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research
- Ingolf Schaedler, Deputy Director General for Innovation at the Austrian Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology
The event ended with “the way forward” from Peter Zangl, Deputy Director General of DG Information Society, and an announcement from the Finnish Presidency of a follow-up meeting of National IST Directors in Helsinki in November 2006, in parallel with IST 2006.
Closing words were given by Secretary of State Mag. Eduard Mainoni.
