The Information Society can render physical distance irrelevant - its benefits are available to people wherever they are, as long as they are online.
Many EU policies and activities therefore promote the Information Society and its benefits both to the regions of Europe and to developing countries around the world, while the EU also plays a key role in developing the Information Society internationally.
- New Opportunities for Europe's Regions: By bringing people together regardless of the distance between them, the Information Society is particularly effective at bringing new social and economic opportunities to people in Europe's less developed or remote regions, helping balance development between urban and rural areas.
