MORE PROJECTS
EU-funded research projects in the area of digital content and services help improving our lives in many ways: from better health care to safer e-business-models, from digital movie theatres to more flexible, interesting and individual learning.

MYHEART: Fighting cardio-vascular diseases by prevention and early diagnosis
MORE
Cardio-vascular diseases (CVD) are the leading cause of death in the western world. In Europe over 20% of all citizens suffer from a chronic CVD and 45% of all deaths are due to CVD. Europe spends annually billions of Euro's on the treatment of CVD. With the upcoming aging population, it is a challenge for Europe to deliver its citizens healthcare at affordable costs.
The MYHEART research project is fighting CVD by preventive lifestyle and early diagnosis. It has developed integrated textile sensors which can be attached to everyday clothes. The result is, for example, an "intelligent shirt" that constantly monitors the heart rate of people who have suffered from a heart attack in the past - at work, in the car and even while doing sports. The EU is supporting this 6-year-project with a total of € 16.000.000.

AGAMEMNON/ARCHEOGUIDE: Wireless networks for archaeological travels through the time
Use
your camera-equipped 3G mobile phones to get a personalised multimedia
guide to archaeological sites and museums - like Ancient Olympia in
Greece or the Louvre in France! The
AGAMEMNON-project is
working on this sophisticated service which will be based on an
interactive multimedia system that provides relevant text, videos,
speech and pictures with 3D reconstructions to visitors' mobile
telephones.
Sophisticated 3D animated reconstructions of ancient ruins have also been developed under another IST research project, called ARCHEOGUIDE. The system automatically identifies the visitors' position and objects in their field-of-view by using a video camera mounted on special glasses or binoculars. The system then provides the user with virtual 3D reconstruction models of buildings and animations that mix seamlessly with their natural view. The EU has granted a total funding of € 4.600.000 for the two research projects combined.

SECUREPHONE: Secure contracts signed by mobile phone
The
SecurePhone project aims at
developing a new mobile communication system infrastructure which will
ensure the mutual identification of mobile phone speakers enabling them
to deal legally binding e-contracts by a mobile phone call.
The existing
communication infrastructure, lacking strong users identification,
cannot be used for legally binding transactions. The solution proposed
by this project is to realise an innovative PDA enhanced with a
"biometric recogniser" in order to permit to users to mutually recognise
each other and securely authenticate. EU support of this project amounts
to € 2.000.000.

PRESTOSPACE: Preservation of audio-visual contents in Europe towards storage and access
MORE
PRESTOSPACE's
vision is to find any film, documentary, music/data CD, etc. in any
European library or archive with just some mouse clicks. The project
aims at technical solutions and integrated systems for a complete
digital preservation of all kinds of audio-visual collections. The
consortium includes research institutions, archive institutions,
universities and industry partners from a dozen European countries and
the USA. The European Union funding for the 40-month-project is €
9.000.000.

EUROPA CINEMAS: Support for cinemas dedicated to European film productions
Europa
Cinemas, initiated in 1992 and supported by the
MEDIA
programme, is a multi-country network of cinema operators that aims
at increasing the circulation of European films. It has developed an
effective incentive scheme to encourage member exhibitors to screen
films from other European countries.
With 60% European screenings and especially 37% non-national European screenings (2005), the network largely outperforms the rest of the market where US-films account for 67% of the market share and European films only for 22% (with 11% of non-national European films).
Europa Cinemas has also developed a Digital cinema strategy for its
member cinemas, since digital screening represents a major revolution
for the sector and will impact dramatically on independent cinema
exhibitors. Today, the Europa Cinema-network comprises over 560 cinemas with more
than 1300 screens in over 300 European cities.

TELCERT: Assuring interoperability in technology-enhanced learning
The interoperability of e-Learning systems and materials is at the heart of the TELCERT-project. It strives at enabling authors, suppliers and standards organisations to adapt their national or local e-Learning-systems to new developments from learning communities in other regions and countries.
The advantage for the learners, i.e. everyone of us: More flexible, interesting and individual learning - whenever and wherever we want! The European Commission has granted this project a funding of € 1.800.000.
