POLICY :: RFID :: What is at Stake :: Radio Spectrum

Radio Spectrum

Like all wireless devices, RFID applications need available radio spectrum to transmit data without any interference or disturbance. Co-ordination among EU countries must be improved to ensure that spectrum needs are fulfilled.

For many years, most EU Countries have provided several frequency bands for RFID on an unlicensed basis. But the absence of a coordinated approach resulted in a fragmented range of frequencies. Considering the growing demand for RFID frequency bands, the European Commission adopted a Decision in 2007 calling upon the Member States to provide for RFID frequencies in the Ultra High Frequency (UHF) band.

However, even with these measures, spectrum allocation might remain insufficient in the future. Industry is currently examining long term requirements for additional spectrum. If additional spectrum is needed, the Commission may use its competences under the Radio Spectrum Decision to identify additional harmonised spectrum for RFID throughout the European Union.
