Workshop objectives
To share best practices, develop common policies, and understand the privacy risks of RFID, the European Commission is considering the set-up of a European Network on RFID which might be supported by the Competitiveness and Innovation framework Programme (CIP) in its Work Programme 2008 for ICT policy support.
The aim of the network is to create a federating platform for all European stakeholders in the development and usages of technology and, therefore, to establish the European Union as a world leader in RFID excellence by addressing barriers to adoption and deployment as well as fragmentation in the marketplace. This platform would also act as a driving force for coordination, support and strengthening of the national bodies. It should involve a large number of Member States' authorities dealing with public RFID issues, and also include the participation of civil society, RFID advocacy groups, research agencies, and possibly industry, where relevant.
The workshop took place in Brussels on Wednesday 12 March 2008, 14:00 – 18:00. The Commission services briefly described the thematic network in the context of the CIP.Participants with a strong interest then presented in a series of expressions of interest how they see this network to be set up and its activities. Sufficient time was allowed for networking. The meeting concluded with the identification of core groups of very knowledgeable and committed actors and first sketch proposals to be possibly submitted to the call expected to close on 9 September 2008.
