Requests made to ENISA as part of the European strategy on NIS
The European Commission has requested ENISA's contribution to help implement its NIS Strategy.
Trusted partnership on a data collection framework
Effective policy making needs a clear understanding of the nature and extent of the challenges. This calls for not only reliable and up-to-date statistical and economic data both on information security incidents and levels of consumer and user confidence, but also up-to-date data on the size and trends of the ICT security industry in Europe.
The Commission requested ENISA to develop a trusted partnership with Member States and stakeholders to devise an appropriate data collection framework, including the procedures and mechanisms to collect and analyse EU-wide data on security incidents and consumer confidence. ENISA completed a report in November 2007 on the findings of its discussion with stakeholders and recommendations to establish such a partnership.
European Information Sharing and Alert System (EISAS)
Public authorities, in Member States and at EU level, have a key role to play in properly informing users to enable them to contribute to their own security and safety. Raising awareness on NIS issues and providing appropriate and timely information via dedicated e-security web portals on threats, risks and alerts as well as on best practices should be priorities.
To that end, the Commission requested ENISA to examine the feasibility of creating a European multilingual information sharing and alert system, which would build upon and link together existing or planned national public and private initiatives. ENISA completed a report in January 2008 examining whether and if so, how such a system could be achieved by combining existing national systems.
