Planned activities
A number of activities contribute to the implementation of EU's Strategy for a secure information society.
Improving the security and resilience of NIS
This activity is now developed as Critical Information Infrastructures Protection (CIIP). The aim is to ensure that essential infrastructures (eg. telecommunication networks, the Internet, …) which underlie digital services are sufficiently reliable and robust.
Developing multi-stakeholder dialogues
The aim of these structured multi-stakeholder dialogues is to best to exploit existing tools and regulatory instruments to attain an appropriate balance between security and the protection of fundamental rights, including privacy. Ongoing dialogues are:
- Dialogue on Trusted Computing
- Raising the awareness of the stakeholders about security issues in order to strengthen the trust of end users
- Ensuring business commitment to a culture of security in industry
- Benchmarking Member States NIS policies: including specific security policies for the public sector. The aim was to contribute to identify and encourage the deployment of the most effective practices throughout the EU.
Building partnerships for data collection and alert system
- Requests to ENISA:
- Trusted partnership on a data collection framework The Commission asked ENISA to develop a trusted partnership between ENISA, Member States and stakeholders to develop an appropriate data collection framework, including the procedures and mechanisms to collect and analyse EU-wide data on security incidents and consumer confidence.
- European Information Sharing and Alert System (EISAS) The Commission asked ENISA to carry out a feasibility study for a European information sharing and alert system to facilitate effective responses to existing and emerging threats to electronic networks.
- NEW Flash Eurobarometer: Confidence in Information Society
- As indicated in the
announcement of the eYouGuide, the result of the "Flash
Eurobarometer" survey to appraise the confidence of EU home internet
users is available. This survey provides up-to-date statistical data on
citizens' confidence in the information society

- Other partnership:
- Data on ICT security market : Because of the highly fragmented market in the EU and its rather specific nature, the Commission will invite Member States, the private sector and the research community to establish a strategic partnership to ensure the availability of data on the ICT security industry and the evolving market trends for products and services in the EU.
Promoting International cooperation on NIS
The aim is to increase global cooperation on NIS, notably in implementing the agenda adopted at the World Summit on Information Society
Encouraging NIS research
The aim is to ensure that an appropriate level of financial resources is allocated to research on NIS and dependability technologies under the 7th EU Framework Programme.
