US - EU research efforts in developing new techniques and capabilities for the "Operating Room of the future"
future collaborative research efforts may be envisaged between US and EU projects
[p]University of Maryland School of Medicine is currently working on a project, with reference to developing new techniques and capabilities for what is called the "Operating Room of the future".[/p] [p]Their studies have four pillars:[/p] [ul][li]Operating Room Informatics,[/li] [li]Surgical Simulation,[/li] [li]Smart Images, and[/li] [li]Physical and Cognitive Ergonomics and Human Factors as these impact the surgical environment.[/li][/ul] [p]To ensure that their research is fully cognizant of developments abroad, they are carrying out a brief study of the current state of the art in Europe.[/p] [p]They are looking for projects or accomplishments in these four arenas, and ideally some articles which might look at these issues on a Europe-wide basis. They would welcome recommendations and Points of Contact for individuals, organisations, demonstration facilities, or papers on these subjects.[/p] [p]Specifically, they would like to look at instruments used in Europe to measure performance related to human factors and ergonomics in the perioperative environment (e.g. GOALS).[/p] [p]They are also investigating current European practice and research in surgical training using simulation, especially the degree to which it is being routinely incorporated into surgical training or certification, as well as for surgical preparation. It is possible that some of these projects may eventually result in future collaborative research efforts, if they can get enough information from European researchers to identify projects and capabilities which could support/overlap their efforts.[/p]
