How to apply existing Community legal framework to telemedicine services?
How to apply existing Community legal framework to telemedicine services?
16 November 2009 Telemedicine can help increase accessibility to healthcare for patients living in remote geographical areas, allow patients with chronic diseases to be monitored at home and involve patients in the management of their own healthcare. However, despite the potential benefits identified and the potential for growth of the market, the use of telemedicine applications in everyday medicine is still relatively low. One of the reasons identified is the lack of legal clarity. In view of enhancing legal clarity regarding telemedicine services, the Commission will publish in 2010 a Staff Working Paper on Community legal framework applicable to telemedicine.

24 November 2009 - 13 April 2010 — The health domain and its three main industries, pharmaceuticals, medical devices and eHealth, are dominant economic sectors with respect to employment creation and growth. Sustainable delivery of quality healthcare at affordable cost is a major challenge for European healthcare systems for a variety of reasons such as: (a) demographic change and increasing prevalence of chronic diseases; (b) inefficiencies, inadequate safety standards and quality control; (c) demanding citizens who require best-quality care and cover for the use of latest diagnostics and treatments; (d) current focus on treatment rather than on prevention and (e) reducing workforce, availability and accessibility of skilled nurses and medical specialists. This calls for changes in the way healthcare is delivered and the way medical knowledge is managed and transferred to clinical practice. ICT tools and services are key to implement these changes in such an information-intensive domain. The Call 6 will open on 24/11/2009 for Virtual Physiological Human proposals (Objective ICT-2009.5.3).

28 October 2009 — A new set of propositions from a panel of business innovators calls for a far more ambitious and inclusive EU innovation agenda, including strategic investments in community level innovations, in next generation infrastructure and in people, places and networks for innovation.
28 October 2009 — Less congested roads, better and more efficient energy delivery or state of the art medical treatment managed at home are typical examples made possible by the Internet of the Future. It will connect physical objects such as cars or mobile devices with infrastructures (for example traffic management systems), so that massive amounts of data can be used in real-time to improve their business process and efficiency. The European Commission today unveiled a strategy to put Europe at the forefront when it comes to the development of smart internet-powered infrastructures. It calls on Europe's governments and its ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) sector to take advantage of the increasing demand for innovative applications of the internet to make existing infrastructures like healthcare systems, energy grids or traffic management 'smart'. To do this it will launch a partnership between public authorities and major ICT players with a budget for 2011-2013 of €300 million available for projects to be selected in the near future, to complement the €200 million yearly ICT support to ongoing research for underlying internet technology.
22 October 2009 @neurIST was well represented at the Congress. The course during the workshop was designed to provide an insight of the @neurIST computational tool-chain to the participants by means of a practical hands-on simulation. Dissemination activities were important; attendees showed a great enthusiasm in gathering the information about the project activities and expressed their interest in participating in a multicentric trial aimed at clinical evaluation of these tools. An important recognition was attributed to one of the project scientis: Dr Pankaj Singh was one of the five young neurosurgeons to receive an award by the the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies. Much more is available on the project newsletter.
