Mobidot will collect personal mobility data of participants via their smartphones and provide them with information on smarter transport choices. Via social media such as Facebook, Mobidot will also allow individuals and groups to compete in mobility games, which are based on their data and choices. And the winner is ... not just the smartest traveller, but also your town, the environment, your fellow citizens etc. By the way, Mobidot was found, while SUNSET was (and still is) a running FP7 research project.

The European Commission is working with 27 of the world's leading tech companies and associations to measure their carbon footprint arising from the production, transport and sales of ICT goods, networks and services. According to a study published today, 10 measurement tools and standards pilot-tested by the organisations are comparable. The aim is to have a common measurement framework in order to get a clearer picture, and eventually a reduction, of CO2 emissions.

iMarine (www.i-marine.eu) is a pioneering initiative that fosters an ecosystem approach to fisheries management and conservation of living marine resources. It achieves this objective by driving a Community of Practice which brings together practitioners and policy makers. “A single community that shares data and knowledge within iMarine and develops tools and information can collectively advance the adoption of an ecosystem approach based on transparent and well-informed decision-making for the conservation of sustainable use of marine resources”, explains Patricio Bernal, coordinator of the IUCN High Seas Initiative and iMarine Advisory Council Member. To increase awareness of these urgent issues, iMarine has come up with a novel new mobile app – AppliFish – opening up marine knowledge to anyone with a mobile device anytime, anywhere. AppliFish is available both for Android https://play.google.com/store/search?q=applifish and iOS https://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/applifish/id593857305?mt=8&ign-mpt=uo%3D2 Learn more about AppliFish from the iMarine press release: http://www.i-marine.eu/Content/Multimedia.aspx?id=5ffcfcdf-df2e-4960-b09e-810be78fe047

This Competition is launched by the European Commission in memory of Diogo Vasconcelos. The aim is to find the best social innovation solutions to help people move towards work or into new types of work. Over 25 million Europeans are out of work. On top of that, many people are stuck in low-paid jobs or sense that they have few opportunities on the job market – sometimes because of their gender, age or a handicap. This Competition invites any European to come up with new solutions to create new opportunities for work, and for better work. Not doing anything about unemployment and under-employment is not just cruel and wasteful; the corrosive effects of high unemployment will cast a shadow over the economy and our society for years to come. The Competition, launched on 1 October 2012 with as deadline 21 December 2012, includes a strong mentoring component for shortlisted entries. Eventually the three best proposals (indicative maximum) will each be awarded with a prize of 20,000 euros in May 2013. A second prize competition will be launched in 2014.

A European passenger car talking to a US pick-up truck is shown at a joint EU-US stand at the current World Congress on Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) in Vienna. The European Car sends an Emergency Electronic Brake Light message to the pick-up which understands it and warn its driver about the emergency braking ahead. Although both cars involved in this ‘cooperative mobility’ instance do not exactly 'speak' the same language, they can 'understand' each other thanks to EU-US harmonization efforts carried out over the past three years with the aim to bring these systems more quickly and cost-efficiently onto the roads. The joint EU-US efforts allow the use of the same communication hardware (platform) on both sides of the Atlantic, resulting in a decrease of system costs for carmakers, quicker deployment of applications based on car-to-car communication and finally lower costs for vehicle buyers. The platform can be used for a host of other messages as well, and it goes without saying that it also works in the other direction (US vehicle to EU vehicle), i.e. it is fully bi-directional.

A special 3D microchip, being designed by an EU-funded research project, looks set to drastically cut the electricity and the installation costs of servers in cloud computing data centres, cementing Europe's place as the home of green computing. Cloud data centres – thousands of computer servers in one location - can be the size of football fields and consume the same amount of electricity as 40,000 homes. The data centres are essential because they enable the cloud computing revolution: consumer services like Facebook, Gmail, Spotify and mobile apps, and business services like customer databases

The European Commission, industry and academia have agreed to launch a Public Private Partnership (PPP) in Robotics, to help Europe-based companies take a larger share of the €15.5 billion annual global robotics market. Representatives from European robotics manufacturers, research institutes joined European Commission Vice President Neelie Kroes in signing a Memorandum of Understanding, the first step towards a PPP launch in 2013. The Commission believes that the future PPP will strengthen the EU robotics sector.

Don’t you think that the economic and technological potential of standards remains highly unexpressed? Don’t you think that ICT standards might get depressed soon? Don’t you think that the problem with an open and voluntary definition of interoperability lies upon the challenging communication of what standards are and why they are so important, with respect to the social challenges that the EU is facing today (here we specifically refer to standards in the fields of eHealth, eGovernment, Smart Cities, and IT Security)? ICT standards might be able to solve many of the major problems of the Universe, except communicating such an extraordinary ability.

More than 800 members are currently taking part in the online discussion platform which Neelie Kroes launched on 19 April in preparation for the Digital Agenda Assembly (Brussels, 21-22 June) and the forthcoming review of the Digital Agenda for Europe. The members making the most interesting contributions in each group will be invited to attend the Assembly. Highlights include, an active online forum on Public Services and sustainability featuring a lively discussion in which concrete ways Europe should enable and deliver innovation in digital public services and sustainability . The Jobs and Skills online forum has also engaged participants to discuss how to bridge the gap between the shortage of ICT skilled workforce and the high supply of young Europeans in search for a job and an attractive career . They are already sharing good examples of practices (from ICT companies or others) bridging that gap. Share your example ! If you are interested in these or other issues discussed in the platform, join and contribute to the debate

Citizens and business often waste energy because they do not realise which appliances and lighting use the most energy. An EU-funded project tested in the United Kingdom and Bulgaria is helping to change that – showing consumers reduced energy usage by an average of 8% when provided with an "information dashboard" about their energy use. The Digital Environment Home Energy Management System (DEHEMS) project shows that when a consumer receives more information about their energy use, and can share and compare this with neighbours and family, they are more likely to change their behaviour. The EU-funded system presents data every 6 seconds through a small digital display. The data can also be displayed in real time via a TV screen, mobile phone, PC or social media app.

The European Commission today adopted a Green Paper and launched a public consultation on the future of LED-based lighting. LED lighting is one of the most energy-efficient and versatile forms of lighting - saving up to 70% energy and money compared to other lighting technologies. Faster LED deployment will ensure the success of Europe's lighting industry and help reduce energy use from lighting by 20% by 2020. But Europe also faces a number of challenges and more input is needed from citizens and businesses to refine the policy. To this end a consultation will run until 29 February 2012 to collect feedback on the Commission's ideas.

Among the important priorities of the Digital Agenda for Europe (DAE) is the establishment of a common methodological framework for the measurement of the energy intensity and carbon emissions arising from the production, transport and selling processes of ICT goods, networks and services, and one which can be widely adopted by the ICT industry. To support and facilitate the efforts of industry and the community more generally in reaching the above objective, the Commission has launched in June 2011 a 1st call for volunteers from across the ICT industry to carry out a number of pilot testing projects. Ten in total applications of either individual organisations or consortia (representing in total 22 industry organisations from across the whole industry sector and the whole world) were received and approved in the context of the above call. The whole pilot testing initiative was launched in a meeting on 28 November 2011 in Brussels. As the Commission has received further expressions of interest from industry to take part in this pilot testing initiative, it has decided to launch a 2nd call for volunteers from across the ICT industry to carry out a number of additional pilot testing projects.
