Fish stocks in the Mediterranean have been declining for decades. Over 90% of the fish stocks assessed are over-exploited, and despite recent efforts the situation is not improving. Managing fish stocks is complicated by the fact that many of them are shared with non-EU countries.
Maria Damanaki, European Commissioner for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, will be in Rome, Italy, on 8 November 2012 for a series of meetings with high-level personalities and organisations on key fisheries issues.
The European Commission is ready for the 2012 bluefin tuna fishing campaign. In close collaboration with the Member States concerned, all necessary measures are being taken to ensure that the EU fishing fleet fully respects the rules during the main fishing season.
