On 9 October 2017 the Council agreed on next year's total allowable catches (TACs) and national quotas for the ten commercially most important fish stocks in the Baltic Sea.

Fisheries ministers are meeting at the AGRIFISH Council in Luxembourg on 9 and 10 October to reach a political agreement on the Baltic fishing opportunities for 2018. Commissioner for the Environment, Fisheries and Maritime Affairs, Karmenu Vella, will present the Commission's proposal, and urge ministers to set fishing opportunities at sustainable levels.

The European Commission has announced over €550 million of EU-funded initiatives to tackle global oceans challenges, at the Our Ocean Conference 2017 in Malta, co-hosted by High Representative/Vice-President Federica Mogherini and Karmenu Vella, Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries.
