The European Commission today presented its proposal for next year's (2013) fishing opportunities for fish stocks which are jointly managed with third parties, such as Norway or Regional Fisheries Management Organisations (RFMOs) throughout the world.

The European Commission has proposed fishing opportunities for 2013 for certain fish stocks in the Atlantic and the North Sea. Today's proposal sets levels of total allowable catch (TAC) and fishing effort for stocks managed exclusively by the EU. In line with scientific advice, the Commission proposes to increase or maintain the TACs for 16 stocks (including certain stocks of cod, Norway lobster, and sole), and reduce them for 47 stocks.

The Fisheries Council has just reached a political agreement on Fishing Opportunities in the Baltic Sea for 2013. After the discussions among the ministers, the compromise was reached just after the first exchange of views.

The Agriculture and Fisheries Council meeting of October 2012 will take place in Luxemburg on 22 & 23 October 2012, under the presidency of Mr Sofoklis Aletraris, Cypriot Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment. Maria Damanaki, Commissioner for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, and Dacian Cioloş, Commissioner for Agriculture & Rural Development, will represent the Commission at the meeting. The Fisheries points will be dealt with on Monday morning and again on Tuesday afternoon, and a press conference will be held at the end of Tuesday's discussions.

European Commission welcomes the results of the North Atlantic Fisheries Organisation's (NAFO) Annual Meeting, which ended successfully on 21 September. NAFO adopted total allowable catches (TACs) for a number of stocks in line with the scientific advice, and made further progress in protecting Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems (VMEs). NAFO paved the way for further improving its performance, in particular by taking measures for the best data and science.
