EU has committed many Sustainable Fisheries Partnerships with third countries to enhance sustainable exploitation of fisheries. The annual contribution from the EU to these countries is € 180 million.

This year's annual meeting of the South-East Atlantic Fisheries Organisation was held in Swakopmund, Namibia, from 30 November to 4 December. The outcome is very satisfactory for the EU, which was again a driving force behind the adoption of the main measures - notably the updating of the system of Observation, Inspection, Compliance and Enforcement as well as all Scientific Committee recommendations, notably the TAC of Patagonian Toothfish and Deep-sea Red Crabs.

Healthy oceans are fundamental for a healthy climate – which is why governments need to do more to protect them, EU Commissioner Karmenu Vella, responsible for environment, maritime affairs and fisheries, said at the Oceans Day conference in Paris today. With oceans under increasing pressure, not least from climate change itself, Mr Vella made the case for better managed oceans as a way to return them to good health and support their role as climate regulators.

The European Commission has adopted a key investment package for the UK's maritime sector and especially its fisheries and aquaculture industry. Roughly €310 million will be made available under the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund for the period 2014-2020, €243 million of which are EU funds.

The European Commission has adopted a key investment package for the Portuguese maritime, fisheries and aquaculture sectors. The roughly €506 million available under the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF) for the period 2014-2020 include about €392 million of EU funding.
