Oceans, seas and their resources are an important part of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. The international community has the responsibility to implement agreed commitments properly in order to counter the major threats to the marine environment and ensure that sustainable development targets are met. This was the EU's message at today's UN General Assembly in New York.

The European Commission has adopted a key investment package for the Irish maritime, fisheries and aquaculture sectors. More than €239 million will be made available under the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF) for the period 2014-2020, including an EU contribution of €147 million.

Healthy oceans are fundamental for a healthy climate – which is why governments need to do more to protect them, EU Commissioner Karmenu Vella, responsible for environment, maritime affairs and fisheries, said at the Oceans Day conference in Paris today. With oceans under increasing pressure, not least from climate change itself, Mr Vella made the case for better managed oceans as a way to return them to good health and support their role as climate regulators.
