Delegations from the European Union (EU) and the Seychelles have today successfully initialled a Fishery Access Agreement at a meeting in Victoria, Seychelles, which will allow Seychelles flagged vessels to continue fishing operations in the waters of Mayotte. These waters will become EU waters when Mayotte becomes an outermost region of the EU on 1 January 2014.

Ahead of the annual meeting of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) to be held in Cape Town on 18-25th November 2013, the European Commission has reemphasised the importance of ICCAT continuing to manage fish stocks in a way that allows for sustainable yield for fishermen and ensures a stable flow of products to the markets.

Maria Damanaki, European Commissioner for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, will make a two-day trip to Albania on 7th and 8th November where she will meet senior government officials and entrepreneurs from the fisheries, processing sector and coast guards.

The European Commission has expressed its disappointment at the failure of the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) to reach agreement on the establishment of marine protected areas in Antartica at its 23rd Annual Meeting held in Hobart, Australia, from 23rd October to 1st November.

Organised under the auspices of the upcoming Greek Presidency, the European Commissioner for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Maria Damanaki, will host an international conference on sustainable fishing capacity management, with the participation of the Food and Agriculture Organisation, in Thessaloniki, Greece, on 13-14 March 2014.

The European Commission has proposed fishing opportunities for 2014 for the Atlantic and the North Sea, as well as in international waters. This is the annual proposal for the amount of fish which can be caught by EU fishermen from the main commercial fish stocks next year.

A meeting of Coastal States (European Union, Faroe Islands, Iceland and Norway) was held in London on the 23rd and 24th October under the chairmanship of the European Union to discuss management measures for 2014 for the mackerel stock in the North-East Atlantic. The meeting was also attended by observers from Greenland and the Russian Federation.
