The third round of negotiations on a new protocol of the Fisheries Agreement between EU and Morocco took place in Rabat on 15 and 16 January 2013. Following two rounds essentially dealing with the technical conditions that would apply to the EU fleet under the new protocol, the discussions dealt with financial aspects as well as with political issues.

The Agriculture and Fisheries Council meeting of December 2012 took place in Brussels on 18-19 December 2012, under the presidency of Mr Sofoklis Aletraris, Cypriot Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment. The Council discussed and reached agreement on fishing opportunities for 2013 for the main commercial fish stocks of the Atlantic, the North Sea and the Black Sea.

After yesterday's vote in the European Parliament's fisheries committee, negotiations on the reform package will regain momentum in early 2013 with both the vote on the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) proposal in the Parliament plenary and, the subsequent vote on the EMFF proposal.

Commissioner Damanaki has appointed Pierre-Yves Cousteau as special advisor because of his long-term engagement to promote the sustainable use of the marine resources. Mr. Cousteau is president of Cousteau Divers which promotes the study and protection of the environment. In this interview, he discusses his work in the area of sustainability and marine protected areas, his new role as a special advisor and how participatory science works in practice.

The Fisheries Committee of the European Parliament voted on 18 December 2012 to support the key elements of the Commission's proposal for a new Common Fisheries Policy. Amendments endorsing legal obligations to end discards and to manage fish stocks above sustainable levels, as well as amendments that call for more regionalised decision-making were adopted by comfortable majorities.
