We are witnessing big improvements in EU fish stocks in the North-east Atlantic whilst Mediterranean stocks are under worsening threat. This was the assessment presented by experts at the European Commission's annual “State of Fish Stocks in European waters” seminar on the 17th September in Brussels.
Maria Damanaki, European Commissioner for Maritime Affaires and Fisheries, has convened an open seminar on the morning of the 17th September to look into the state of European fish stocks and fishing fleets.
The European Commission has adopted a package of measures to address the continued unsustainable fishing of herring by the Faroe Islands. The measures include the ban of imports of herring and mackerel from the Atlanto-Scandian stocks that has been caught under the control of the Faroe Islands as well as fishery products containing or made of such fish.
