As Europe joins in the celebrations on this year's World Tourism Day, the EU is therefore deepening its commitment to developing tourism in our coastal and maritime regions.

A meeting of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) in Rome drew to a successful close on 23 September. This meeting was devoted to the implementation of the medium-term strategy for the sustainability of Mediterranean and Black Sea fisheries: the assembly agreed on timeframe and prioritisation of actions, funding and quantifiable goals.

Commissioner Karmenu Vella participated today in the 3rd Atlantic Stakeholder Platform Conference in Dublin, following the successful editions in Porto and Brest last year. The Commissioner reaffirmed his commitment to strengthen cooperation in the Atlantic. He expressed his appreciation for the progress made by the maritime stakeholders in the region. He also chaired the first edition of the "Atlantic project awards", rewarding the five most innovative and successful projects.

The 38th annual meeting of the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organisation (NAFO) took place from 19 to 23 September 2016 in Varadero, Cuba. NAFO Contracting Parties decided on total allowable catches (TACs) for a number of stocks. Under the leadership of the EU and Canada, NAFO also set the course for improved fisheries management in the high seas.

The European Commission has adopted an action plan setting out how Croatia can overcome identified shortcomings in its fisheries control system, following an inquiry into irregularities last year. The measures were agreed together with the Croatian authorities and are already being implemented.
