The Atlantic – A Shared Resource

Ms Maria Damanaki, Commissioner for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries will participate in a high level meeting concerning the Atlantic in Galway, Ireland on May 24 and 25.
The Commissioner is expected to launch the Atlantic Action Plan, which focuses on EU policies on regional development and research towards blue growth, while a Joint EU-USA-Canada Declaration will be signed targeting wider transatlantic research partnership. The event is organised by the Irish Presidency and the European Commission and will also be attended by Ms Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, the EU Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science, Mr Enda Kenny T.D., Prime Minister of Ireland and representatives from EU Atlantic Coastal States, Canada and the USA.
Marine research in the European Union and the Atlantic
The European Union, the United States and Canada today signed the "Galway Statement on Atlantic Ocean Cooperation" with the aim of furthering research into the workings of the Atlantic Ocean and its interaction with the Arctic.
A European Maritime Day on sustainable maritime tourism and connectivity
Coastal development and sustainable maritime tourism were the focus themes of this year's edition of European Maritime Day. For two days in Valletta, Malta, experts from all maritime sectors and from all over Europe discussed how to drive the tourism industry forward and maintain its position not only as a sector for sustainable growth, but also as a crucial driver for the wider economy and a key contributor to the EU's Blue Growth agenda.
