Commissioner Maria Damanaki at the World Ocean Summit in San Francisco
(28/02/2014) On 25 February 2014 Commissioner Maria Damanaki presented the EU's blue growth and sustainable fisheries agenda at the World Oceans Summit in San Francisco.
She made the case that sustainability and economic opportunity can be reconciled. The recent reform of the Common Fisheries Policy is a success story and proof that change is possible. On international oceans governance, she argued that we need to overcome fragmentation. UNCLOS remains the cornerstone but needs an implementing agreement for ABNJ.

The European Commission has today presented its new strategy to support coastal and maritime tourism in Europe. Recognising the sector's potential for sustainable growth and job creation, the strategy outlines 14 actions to help coastal regions and businesses tackle the challenges they face and strengthen the sector's position as a key driver of Europe's blue economy.
