Commission confirms Dutch fisheries measures for three Natura 2000 sites
(24/09/2012) Today the European Commission confirmed fisheries management measures that the Netherlands propose for three coastal areas designated as part of the Natura 2000 network: Vlakte van de Raan and Voordelta in Southern Netherlands and the North Sea Coastal Zone in the Wadden Sea.
The fishing vessels will have to notify the relevant authorities when entering any of these areas to carry-out fishing activities which could harm or significantly disrupt the conservation objectives. Specific restrictions are put forward on the use of certain seabed-contacting fishing gear.
The Common Fisheries Policy allows the Member States to take non-discriminatory measures to minimise the effect of fishing on the conservation of marine ecosystems within 12 nautical miles from the coast. As the measures proposed apply to fishing vessels from other Member States, the Netherlands has duly notified the countries concerned and the North Sea Regional Advisory Council. They had an opportunity to submit their views to the Commission, to help inform its final decision.
