(18/12/2013) The AGRIFISH Council, with the support of the Commission, has reached unanimous political agreement on the 2014 fishing opportunities for certain fish stocks and groups of fish stocks. These apply in EU waters and to EU vessels in certain non-EU waters.

The agreement is the first of this kind to take place in the framework of the reformed CFP. Formal adoption will follow by written procedure once all language versions are finalised.

Negotiators explored all possible options and took into account the situation of the sector and the efforts already made by fishermen in the Member States concerned. The results are fully consistent with scientific advice and with the principles of the reformed CFP, particularly Maximum Sustainable Yield and precaution when insufficient data available. To be noted that the agreed mackerel quotas are provisional, pending the results of the negotiations with Norway scheduled for early 2014.
