New CFP to come into force on 1st January after official adoption
(18/12/2013) The reformed Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) has been officially adopted and will now be applicable throughout European Union waters as of 1 January 2014. This comes after the European Parliament's plenary session gave its full support for the reform package which was agreed at political level in May this year.
The overall objective of the new CFP is to make fishing sustainable from an environmental, economic and social perspective. The new CFP seeks to bring fish stocks back to sustainable levels and to put an end to wasteful fishing practices. It seeks to bring new prosperity to the fishing sector, create new opportunities for jobs and growth in coastal areas, and end dependence on subsidies.
