FET Funding Opportunities
introduction text funding opportunities (july 2013)
As FP7 will finish at the end of this year, the latest FET calls are now closed. Next FET calls under the new framework programme Horizon 2020 are expected to be announced before the end of the year.
However, some funding opportunities rise within the two FET Flagships.
FET Flagships funding opportunities

The two selected FET Flagship projects will dedicate an important part of their budget to specific competitive calls as agreed with the Commission, enabling them to expand their consortia in a dynamic way. The two consortia have already started to define the specific topics and the calls will be opened in the last quarter of 2013.

Similarly, the already running project CHIST-ERA is going to launch joint-calls in October 2013.

Horizon 2020
Horizon 2020 will be the new EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation, running from 2014 to 2020 with some €70 billion budget (still to be agreed by the Council and the European Parliament). From this global budget, 3,5% will be dedicated to FET!
The right analysis for the best possible impact

The Directorate General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology (DG CONNECT) made a call on all stakeholders and interested parties to respond to a questionnaire on how we should measure what we are doing. This public consultation was concluded in March 2013, and having collected over 1800 valuable responses we can say it was a success!

What do you think our future will bring? And what does it mean for what the EU should be doing? What are the issues that should be in focus, and how can FET style research help to shape them? The EC has created a platform to allow you to tell us how we can best prepare for the challenges of tomorrow.

European Month of the Brain and "Healthy brain: healthy Europe" Conference in Dublin

Understanding how the human brain works is one of the major challenges in science and technology in order to cure diseases and develop future technologies. To raise awareness on this important topic to take European brain related research to the next level, the EC made May 2013 the Month of the Brain. The "Healthy brain: healthy Europe" Conference was one of the main events organised by the EC in collaboration with the Ireland's Health Research Board, aiming at delivering policy recommendations for brain research and healthcare.

First COFET Conference

The first COFET Conference on "Competitiveness and Innovation in the Context of FET" took place in London on June 20 and 21, gathering more than 50 participants.

Workshop on Human Brain Project: A roadmap for Portugal

Dialogue between art and ICT could stimulate novel solutions to technological and societal challenges. It could lead to new designs for ICT. Such a dialogue could also provide a new conceptual base to argue about technology and its role in society.
FET in Numbers
Overview of FET research projects in FP7

Over the 7 years of FP7 (2007-2013), FET has spent more than 880 M €, funding more than 300 projects! At the end of 2012, it was the first strategic objective (within the ICT Work programme) in terms of number of projects and the second in terms of funding and participations.

FET also managed the evaluation of more than 4000 proposals (FET-Proactive: 522, FET-Open: 3478, Flagships: 32).
FET Xtrack pilot call: lessons learned

FET launched a pilot call, Xtrack, trialling a new and lighter submission process, and aiming at a faster evaluation and simpler project implementation. The call closed by end of January (receiving more than 300 proposals) and 8 proposals are currently under negotiation. Lessons learned from this evaluation will help for the design of future FET work programme under H2020.

Recent additions to the FET portfolio

Have a look at the 56 new projects starting in FET, or currently still under negotiation!

Recent additions to the Flagships portfolio

Recent additions to the Flagships portfolio consist of the two selected Flagship projects, GRAPHENE and HBP, announced end of January 2013 and to be launched in early Autumn 2013.

Projects' news & stories
CHIST-ERA is a coordination and co-operation activity of national and regional research funding organisations in Europe and is supported by the European Union under the ERA-NET funding scheme of the FP7. We interviewed the project Coordinator, Dr. Edouard Geoffrois, to get his feedback and advices about CHIST-ERA project coordination experience.
CURVACE: unveils curved, programmable, artificial compound eye

Despite all our technological advances, it is still often hard to beat nature when it comes to solving problems. Now a project has taken its inspiration from the insect world to build a man-made compound eye, designed to detect motion with a high temporal resolution.

TANGO: Emotional interaction grounded in realistic context

It is often repeated that “It takes two to tango”. This phrase touches on the core of the TANGO project, which focuses on the essential interactive nature of social communication. TANGO turned the spotlight on interaction rather than on individual behaviour and represents a major change of perspective both for ICT and for human neuroscience.

SIEMPRE: Social Interaction and Entrainment using Music PeRformance Experimentation

What are the mechanisms underlying social cognition co-creativity? In order to better understand them, SIEMPRE used art as a means for studying and facing complex phenomena and developped computational models of non-verbal communication, emotion and non-verbal social signals in groups of people.
