Open Innovation 2.0 – A New Paradigm and Foundation for a Sustainable Europe

Marking the successful conclusion of the Open Innovation 2.0 Conference held at Dublin Castle the EU Open Innovation Strategy and Policy Group (OISPG) have released a paper entitled 'Open Innovation 2.0 -- A New Paradigm' which outlines the key emerging characteristics and practices of Open Innovation 2.0 (OI2) and how it can practically help address key European challenges.

Open Innovation 2.0 Yearbook 2013

In the European context, open innovation is now used as a synonym for modern, highly dynamic and inter­active processes. Linear and sequential mindsets are slowly changing to be more opportunistic, more dar­ing and more action-oriented. We need to move from having 'perfect plans for yesterday' to an innovation culture which fosters experimentation and prototyp­ing in real-world settings. This new innovation cul­ture leads to simultaneous technological and societal innovation and encouragement. We need to be daring and also experiment with disruptive approaches as gradual improvement does not properly reflect the potential that the omnipresent, fast-developing ICT provides for parallel innovations.

Open Innovation boosts innovation performance but also generates new management challenges

How Open Innovation is improving the performance of research projects in large companies?

Hard empirical Evidence about the benefits of Open Innovation is still scant. Data describing European-based multinational research projects shows which benefits and challenges can be expected when a company collaborates with science-based or market-based partners.

Bywaas is currently preparing a proposal for funding under the title OpenLaws.eu, applying open innovation principles to the legal field. They are working with open data and open source software and want to include the community for creating better and more active legal information systems for more feedback, more direct democracy and better policy making.

Running a Business in Turbulent Times

On 20 June 2013, the European Small Business Alliance held its annual event. This year, the debate focused on how to run a business nowadays, in the middle of the challenging economic environment with many businesses struggling for survival. Three crucial phases of the business life-cycle were discussed: start up, maintenance and growth. Furthermore, as half of the companies dissolve again within their first two years, the possibility of insolvency was also central to this debate.

Open Innovation 2.0 Dublin Declaration presentation to Commissioner Kroes

Martin Curley , Chair of the OISPG/VP of Intel Labs Europe (on the left) and Naoise O'Muiri, Lord Mayor of Dublin (on the right) presented the Dublin Innovation Declaration to Commissioner Neelie Kroes. 

The Dublin Innovation Declaration was co-created by almost three hundred attendees at the EU Open Innovation 2.0 conference in Dublin on May 20, 21 and details 10 actions items to seek to position Open Innovation 2.0 as the next new official innovation approach of the European Union, highlighting the importance of adopting and embracing innovation and technology to stimulate economic growth and generate job creation in Ireland and across the EU.

Irish Presidency, European Parliament and Commission finished negotiations on Horizon 2020

The future EU funding program can now move forward: Good news for European research and innovation.

The Horizon 2020 package will now be submitted to both the Council and to the European Parliament, where it will be brought forward to a plenary session of the European Parliament.
