Open Innovation 2.0 Yearbook 2013

In the European context, open innovation is now used as a synonym for modern, highly dynamic and interactive processes. Linear and sequential mindsets are slowly changing to be more opportunistic, more daring and more action-oriented. We need to move from having 'perfect plans for yesterday' to an innovation culture which fosters experimentation and prototyping in real-world settings. This new innovation culture leads to simultaneous technological and societal innovation and encouragement. We need to be daring and also experiment with disruptive approaches as gradual improvement does not properly reflect the potential that the omnipresent, fast-developing ICT provides for parallel innovations.

Open Innovation boosts innovation performance but also generates new management challenges

How Open Innovation is improving the performance of research projects in large companies?

Hard empirical Evidence about the benefits of Open Innovation is still scant. Data describing European-based multinational research projects shows which benefits and challenges can be expected when a company collaborates with science-based or market-based partners.

The details of the results can be found on Exnovate newsletter: How popular is OI in the academic community?

Bywaas is currently preparing a proposal for funding under the title, applying open innovation principles to the legal field. They are working with open data and open source software and want to include the community for creating better and more active legal information systems for more feedback, more direct democracy and better policy making.

Running a Business in Turbulent Times

On 20 June 2013, the European Small Business Alliance held its annual event. This year, the debate focused on how to run a business nowadays, in the middle of the challenging economic environment with many businesses struggling for survival. Three crucial phases of the business life-cycle were discussed: start up, maintenance and growth. Furthermore, as half of the companies dissolve again within their first two years, the possibility of insolvency was also central to this debate.
