(04/02/2013) Commission study on benchmarking of parental control tools shows a positive trend in the availability of parental controls
Latest results of the Safer Internet Programme's study on benchmarking of parental control tools for the online protection of children (SIP-BENCH II) shows a positive trend in the availability of parental control tools for mobile phones with the number of solutions available having increased significantly over the past three years.
However, the effectiveness of the tools still needs to be improved, mainly as regards content categories such as violence, racism, self-harm and gambling. Also web 2.0 content, such as blogs and social networking sites, pose problems for the tools and instead, many of the tools offer parents the possibility to block access to such applications completely.
The results of the final benchmarking cycle as well as a study report covering the three years the study ran is available at http://sipbench.eu/
