Audiovisual :: Digital Fight against Breast Cancer - Futuris report on Euronews
10 August 2010
Each year 300.000 new cases of breast cancer are detected in the European Union. While the cause of this fatal disease may not be clear, medical experts agree that if the disease is detected early the chances of survival are much higher.
Digital techniques are at the forefront of early detection. The advantages are clear: digital technology allows different views and angles on one single desktop; doctors can share information from different tests more easily; and, patients will get quicker results.
Modern detection methods, such as medical imaging "MRI" scans, also have many benefits as they detect small tumors much earlier than former methods. In addition, new scanners using ultrasound methods are being developed. These new scanners are a lot less harmful as there is no risk of unnecessary radiation.
The result: more cases of breast cancer can be detected at a very early stage. Digitisation helps save lives.
