Research Result :: Mobility for renal patients with wearable artificial kidney
(09/01/2014) In the near future, chronic renal patients don't have to constantly go to the hospital anymore for a dialysis. The experts of the EU-funded NEPHRON+ project are testing a mobile artificial kidney for continuous on-body blood purification. "If tested well, the tool would be a major leap forward in renal care."
The wearable, artificial kidney is a next generation solution for personalized treatment and management of patients with chronic renal failure.
No more constant trips to the hospital or the dialysis center: With this solution patients could receive continuous dialysis wherever they are. Like that, renal patients could stay mobile and active in social and economic life.
"The ICT-enabled kidney offers better treatment and better blood clearance", the NEPHRON+ experts say. "The treatment can be adjusted to personal parameters and can be remotely controlled by clinical specialists: The system allows for real-time, continuous, multiparametric (tele) monitoring of both the patient and the device via innovative sensors."
The continuous data collection enables early detection of anomalies and trend analysis on the health status of the patient, offering learning curves for improved treatment.
Nephron+ will come to an end in March 2013. It is based in the Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany, France, Austria and Greece.
The EU has supported the project with nearly 5 Million euros through the 7th Framework Program.
