Video: Walking again after spinal cord injury

(19/11/2013) Spinal cord injuries affect more than 50,000 people every year around the world. Losing the ability to walk because of severe spinal cord injury can be devastating for anybody. Nevertheless there might be hope as shown by a research project co-funded by the European Union: NEUWalk.

NEUWalk is a FP7 project that focuses on helping invalid people manage to walk again. Moreover, the project also tries to find methods for a more efficient, less invasive and safer strategy to alleviate the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.

During the trials in the lab, results have proven successful for animals: rats with spinal cord injuries and severe paralysis are now walking thanks to researchers from NEUWalk.

NEUWalk was launched on June 1st 2010 as a 4-year project and is partly funded by the EU Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development with almost 9 million Euros.
