Networked Media 8th FP7 Concertation Meeting : Presentations

Presentations

Plenary

Provides a framework in which the following (but not only) could be presented and discussed between Networked Media projects and the Commission Services.

Also, a time period slot could be reserved for demonstrations and for posters session.

3D Immersive Interactive Media

The 3D Immersive Interactive Media cluster provides an umbrella for better interaction and collaboration amongst related EC funded projects, in order to contribute to their successful completion and to enhance their dissemination efforts. In this context, its targets include the development of strategic plans like research roadmaps or informative standardization papers and present, circulate and disseminate such results among the stakeholders, and possibly to wider audiences. It therefore serves as a gateway to distribute public project results to the outside world, as well as inform cluster members about international research in the concerned area (3D, Immersive and Interactive Media technologies). The cluster will also facilitate joint presence of the participating projects at various dissemination activities, like exhibits, conferences and publications.
The cluster focus on the following issues:

Future Media Networks

The Future Media Networks cluster is formed from the projects in the Networked Media Systems unit that are concerned with the algorithms, protocols, techniques, tools and platforms for the support, by future networks, of advanced interactive media applications and the seamless delivery of a range of content including text, images, audio-visual streams and 3D media, virtual and augmented worlds, and games.

The cluster is therefore in a privileged position to research novel networking solutions in the context of demanding network problems posed by distributed media applications and content delivery systems.

The cluster provides a forum for the exchange of ideas between projects, facilitating the harmonization of views on topics of common interest as well as building a comprehensive view of complementary and alternative solutions.

The projects in the cluster have a spectrum of approaches to the networking of such applications and content, ranging from P2P overlays that make no assumptions on the underlying network through to visionary and potentially disruptive novel network architectures that are able to access, discover and route content natively.

Some of the topics of common interest that are currently under investigation include:

Media Search

The cluster is formed from the projects which are actively pursing research in the multimedia information retrieval and search engine domain. The concertation meetings facilitate the exchange of information and the sharing of results among those research projects. A dozen EU R&D project representatives participate regularly, including representatives from several of the nationally funded flagship projects on search engines.

EU collaborative R&D intervention targeting media search technologies started five years ago. The EC grants can help specialized research organizations and European SMEs to enter and to compete in the exploding and rapidly evolving media search market, where despite the dominant commercial internet search giants such as Google, there is still room for small players, starting with niche markets. Experts agree that the SE business is still in its infancy.

The objective of the entire cluster of projects is to build up specialized knowledge to enter and compete in the European media search markets.

Some of the R&D topics of common interest that are currently under investigation include:

User Centric Media

The User Centric Media cluster is formed from projects that are getting involved at the sector of generation, distribution and experience of high quality media content by end-users. More specifically, User Centric Media is about the user itself becoming the major media producer and distributor, and about exploiting this media created by different citizens at different moments of time to generate a co-created application.

The cluster provides support for the completion and commercial exploitation of the final outcome of the projects, promote their participation at standardization and dissemination activities, boost the synergies with relevant projects in other European, national and regional programmes and contribute to the diffusion of their results between them and to the public.

Between the topics that are currently under investigation concerning the exponential grown user generated content, facilitated by the use of improved modelling tools and digitisation devices and technology innovation in computer graphics and computational equipment, are included:
