History of the video clips
At the occasion of the Berlin Film festival ("Berlinale") in 2007, 5 short clips (around 45 seconds each) were prepared at the request of the Commission with extracts from films supported by the EU's MEDIA programme (all of which received numerous international awards). The clips were meant to promote the launch of the EU's new MEDIA programme 2007-2013, which fosters the circulation of successful films in other EU countries and worldwide.
The names of the clips produced are: Joy, Sadness, Friendship and Love.
The videoclips have been on-line on the MEDIA site on the EUROPA website since mid February 2007 and were also posted on YouTube at the same time (before the new channel EUTube was launched on June 29 2007).
All the clips show "Strong European emotions" as presented in European films and cinemas, from the Life of Amélie via Goodbye Lenin to Breaking the Waves or The Dreamers.
Have a look at the full list of the films used as extracts in the clips.
Cost of each clip: around 350 EUR.
The clip with the theme "Love" includes extracts from the following famous European films, shown throughout Europe in cinema and on TV:
- Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain by Jean-Pierre Jeunet
- Breaking the waves by Lars von Trier
- La meglio gioventù by Marco Tullio Giordana
- La mala educacion by Pedro Almodóvar
- Goodbye Lenin by Wolfgang Becker
- Head-on (Gegen die Wand) by Regie: Fatih Akin
- The Dreamers by Bernardo Bertolucci
The clips were first presented at the occasion of the launch of the MEDIA 2007 programme, at the Berlin Film festival in February 2007, where they were also distributed as DVDs to the ministers of Culture, officials, professionals and media (the DVD contains all 5 clips in all 23 official EU languages). They were again distributed as DVD at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2007.
By 2/07/07 (14 weeks after the clips were originally brought on line in YouTube), the total number of views of our video clips reached 1.350.000, with ratings staying at 4.5 stars on average, and overwhelmingly positive comments.
The story gained increasing interest after an article in the Sunday Times on 1 June 2007.
