From the Exhibition
Today we highlight some stories from the Exhibition:
Three-dimensional
television not science-fiction anymore!
Experience three-dimensional television! Come and see - or even walk through - a holographic display hanging in mid aid at the 3DTV exhibit stand. 3D television promises a richer and more entertaining viewing experience without making you wear those horrible, headache-inducing 3D glasses. Apart from introducing the next revolution in visual technology, the imaging technology developed by 3DTV will also benefit areas as diverse as medicine and air-traffic control.

Never mind the distance – feel the texture!
"Touching" fabric virtually
Buying clothes online has a major disadvantage – you can't feel the fabric. But project HAPTEX is looking to change that. At IST 2006, HAPTEX demonstrates how users can "touch" various virtual textiles, modify their physical properties interactively, then “see and feel the effects of the changes” . They will discover haptic feedback, a highly innovative technology that has not yet reached the popular domain. The HAPTEX system produces a consistent and physically realistic sensation of feeling real textiles, though what they touch is in fact a computer model of the fabric. The system could have numerous applications in the textile industry. The word "haptic" comes from the Greek "haptikos", which means ‘able to touch’. Haptics is a key component in virtual reality systems, adding the sense of touch to the visual-only presentation.
