Background
There were 256 IST Projects enrolled their site into the competition via this website, through which the wider Internet community rated them online. Over 21,000 ratings were received, resulting in a shortlist from which a jury selected the winners.
The aim of the competition was to encourage IST projects to improve their websites, enhancing both their content and visibility, as well as publicising the projects' activities. The winners were announced at the IST 2006 closing session.
Who can apply?
The Best IST Project Website Award was open to all projects within the Information Society Technologies (IST) priority of the EU’s Sixth Framework Programme (FP6) for research and development. The IST Project had to have a dedicated website for the project itself. Projects that have already finished were also eligible.
How the Contest Works At A Glance:
- 256 IST Projects enrolled their site into the competition via this website;
- the wider Internet community then rated them online using four rating criteria - over 21,000 ratings were received;
- a jury selected three finalists from among the highest ranked sites (see finalist selection by jury);
- the winner was announced at the final conference session of IST 2006, winning €10,000 (see Award ceremony);
Anybody could rate any of the websites on the list of participating IST Project Websites, using the following four rating criteria:
| Criteria | Description |
|---|---|
| 1. Content | Is the site content complete, up to date and clear? For example, is it easy to find the project objectives, the roles and contribution of each partner and the results achieved? Is there some content aimed at non-specialists? Is it text-heavy, or does it use images, animations or other audiovisual content? |
| 2. Design, Structure & Navigation | Does the design get in the way of the content? Is the site well-structured? Or does the design elegantly help you find the content you are looking for? Is it easy to navigate and get around the site or did you get lost? Did you find broken links? |
| 3. European Aspects | Does the website clearly identify the project as an EU-funded project? Does it contain links to the relevant pages of the EU institutions, or other EU projects? Is the European nature of the project clear? |
| 4. Overall Experience | Would you recommend your colleagues and friends visit this site? Does it innovate - for example, through interactivity, or by creating a virtual community? Overall, did you enjoy your visit and learn something? |
Evaluation finished at noon (CET), 3 November 2006.
A jury composed of independent experts with experience in Web design, communications and EU research activities will examine the top ranked websites from the Internet vote. The jury will also apply the four Award Criteria above and select three finalists by the beginning of November. The three finalists will be invited to the IST 2006 Conference (if they haven't already planned to do so) where they will be interviewed and a video clip will be produced of their project website.
All three finalists will be awarded with a certificate signed by representatives of the European Commission and the Finnish Presidency of the European Union.
The jury will also select the overall Winner of the Best IST Website Award, who will be awarded the Grand Prize of €10,000 which is sponsored by Nokia. The award ceremony will also feature two other awards.
The Commission reserves the right to change any of the above without prior notification.
