BEAWARE – Energy savings at your fingertips
Exhibition Zone R3 - Green ICT - Booth 10
Enter the green home of tomorrow: in this exhibit, you will see
how sensors measure and help regulate the power consumption of
household appliances like lights, oven, washing machine, TV set,
refrigerator and computers. A real wake-up call!
WHAT?
The technology being developed under the BeAware project helps
European citizens to identify energy consumption patterns at
home and to actively save energy, and money. Wireless and
interactive sensors first measure how much energy is consumed by
household appliances. They then inform consumers of the
potential for energy savings. For instance, your mobile phone
can warn you if your lights are still on at home and your PC
shows you in real time how much energy you are consuming. This
way, consumers can see where and when they use energy and reduce
carbon consumption, before the monthly bill arrives. With
user-friendly monitoring systems, most households could cut
their bills by 15 per cent if they were made aware of their
energy consumption.
Currently families in Helsinki (Finland) and Catania (Italy) are
testing BeAware technologies to monitor their energy
consumption. Energy consumption data will be acquired, processed
and communicated to the participants so they can adapt their
behavior.
WHY?
Reducing energy consumption is essential to cutting global CO2
emissions and preserving the environment: ICTs have developed
excellent tools to tackle this challenge. The EU-funded project
BeAware has developed a new solution that helps consumers
monitor their energy use and make efficiency gains.
WHO?
The project is coordinated by the Helsinki University of
Technology (TKK) in Finland.
Other partners include research centres, universities and
companies from Italy and Sweden.
HOW MUCH?
The BeAware project is funded by the EU Seventh Framework
Programme for Research with 2.7 million euro (for a total
project cost of 3.9 million euro).
It started in May 2008 and is due to finish in April 2011.
