Complex Systems research
The FET initiatives in this area have created a new research area and opened up radically new avenues for many sciences. By modeling the behaviour of complex techno-social systems and by providing ICT tools for mastering the emerging threats of such systems (e.g. financial markets, spreading of infectious diseases), this research contributes to better science-based policy making, as well as entirely new concepts for emotionally intelligent and trustworthy ICT systems.

Advanced robotics
Key research areas were pioneered in FET at the same time as strategies for service robotics were outlined in the European industry. FET contributed to consolidating the European robotics research community, and setting up the European Technology Platform in service robotics.
In addition, FET has pioneered research on novel ideas, such as on artificial living cells, synthetic biology, chemical communication, collective intelligence or bidirectional brain-machine interfacing.
