Universal Remote Console (URC) in Smart Homes

Roseraie 2, 26/11/2008 (16:00-17:30)

Revolutionising the homes of the future with pluggable, personalised user interfaces

The Universal Remote Console (URC) framework is a standards-based technology for an open user interface platform for the next generation of ‘smart homes’ and other control environments. It allows for pluggable, personalised user interfaces, adaptable to the individual needs and preferences of any person, using any modality for input and output, and supporting virtually any kind of device or service in a task-oriented fashion. The networking session will bring together individuals and organisations with an interest in promoting and implementing URC technology in smart homes. The aim is to develop an R&D agenda and to create business opportunities for the participating organisations.

I am project manager of ICT IP FP7 Omega - standing for home gigabit access - http://www.ict-omega.eu/.

not really sure to see how URC and home network management (TR-069 telecom) may interact ??

Gottfried ZIMMERMANN (Access Technologies Group, Germany), 22/08/2008 10:39

The URC technology does not directly address home network management. URC is about providing pluggable and adaptable user interfaces for existing services and devices. So, URC can provide adaptive user interfaces for home network management, but does not do home network management itself.

Gottfried ZIMMERMANN (Access Technologies Group, Germany), 22/08/2008 10:42

There are two readings that i recommend everybody interested in the URC technology: The URC whitepaper (http://myurc.org/whitepaper.php) explains the motivation and basic idea including scenarios. For technical people, i very much recommend to read also the URC Technical Primer (http://myurc.org/TR/urc-tech-primer/).

I am really interested in a session like this, since, as part of an organization involving elderly users, it is a good place to share different points of view from both technological and user partners regarding the implementation of URC in elderly people's lives.

Eduardo CARRASCO (VICOMTech, Spain), 26/08/2008 13:20

It is a fact that several European research projects on eInclusion are very much interested in the URC technology: Vital, MonAmi, Inredis ... In this way, this networking session can be a great opportunity to meet all together and to discuss how can we all get the most of this promising technology.

Antonio KUNG (Trialog, France), 26/08/2008 15:03

URC approach to allow adaptable user interfaces has been adopted by MonAMI as part of an overall solution to reuse mainstream components for AAL systems. See networking session "Mainstream Components for Ambient Assisted Living"

Ulises CORTES (Technical University of Catalonia, Spain), 26/08/2008 16:14

I am coordinating SHAREit an FP EU project and am very interested in all your developments

Jan ALEXANDERSSON (DFKI GmbH, Germany), 26/08/2008 17:17

Comment to Martial BELLEC: The technology you develop in the OMEGA project is complementary to the URC. The OMEGA technology will be necessary for delivering, in particular, interactive services requiring high bandwidth such as, video conferencing. Such an application is vital for the smart homes. Hope to see you in Lyon!

Elena URDANETA (Fundación Ingema, Spain), 26/08/2008 20:36

This session could be an important opportunity to discuss the "Universal technology" for everybody

Bernd KRIEG-BRÜCKNER (DFKI, Germany), 27/08/2008 18:04

we are working on the interaction of wheelchair users with an intelligent environment (device control, intelligent furniture, sliding doors, higher services) and thus welcome a universal hub and URC, in particular for natural language dialogue

Jose Angel MARTINEZ USERO (Technosite. ONCE Foundation, Spain), 28/08/2008 11:07

I am managing a I&D proyect in which we are using URC technology and I consider this network session as a very interesting opportunity to meet with other colleagues and discuss on future market opportunities of this technology.

Niall COGHLAN (Queens University, Belfast, Ireland), 29/08/2008 01:55

This is a key area of interest to those working in technologies for independent ageing. I wish to see this session go foward.

Analia LOPEZ FIDALGO (Galician Institute of Technology, Spain), 16/09/2008 14:44

Interested in this topic

Ingo ZINNIKUS (DFKI, Germany), 14/11/2008 16:50

As coordinator of the VITAL project (Vital Assistance For The Elderly, http://www.ist-vital.org/), which is centered around the URC technology, we are looking forward to this event.

Carmen PASTOR (ROBOTIKER-Tecnalia, Spain), 17/11/2008 13:44

We're quite interested in using the URC technology for other EU R&D projects. Hence, this session is a great opportunity to meet and learn how we can use this promising technology.

Karthik KUMAR S (Interactive Technology Software and Media Association (ITSMA), India), 22/11/2008 16:15

Very interesting and would like to attend this session. Euro-India Research Centre (EIRC) being the key entity of the Indian National Contact Point (NCP) looks at concrete, practical areas for collaboration. So I would like to invite the like minded to participate in our networking session called ‘Euro-India ICT Cooperation Gateway’ (http://ec.europa.eu/information_society/events/cf/item-display.cfm?id=823) for fostering this opportunity. You can also visit us at www.euroindiaresearch.org or mail me at karthik@euroindiaresearch.org / karthik@itsmaindia.org

Farah Ouezzani ( Vodafone Spain )

In our Marketing Department we are developping services and mobile devices for disabled communities and the elderly trying to get them more independent and I think it's an opportunity to share common needs.
